1867년에 증기보트의 선장이었던 Jack Deighton이 Gastown에서 살기 시작하였다. 그는 작은 술집을 열고 사람들과 수다스럽게 대화를 하면서 영업을 하고 있던 사람이다. 그 사람의 별명을 Gassy라고 했는데 그것이 발전되어 Gastown이 되었다고 한다. 해스팅과 버라드 인 부근에서 당시 무역과 경제개발지역이 활성화되기 시작했다. 1886년부터는 캐나다 태평양철도 정거장이 생기고 또한 Water Street 쪽으로 공장 창고들이 들어서기 시작했다. 또한 이곳이 밴쿠버 시로 합병되었지만 불행하게도 같은 해에 큰 불이 나면서 건물 두 개만 남고 다 타버리고 말았다. 그래서 다시 이 지역이 새롭게 재건되면서 번창하기 시작했다. 현재 Gastown은 가장 번화한 다운타운 지역 중에 하나다. 법률사무소, 건축, 컴퓨터 인터넷사업, 인테리어 첨단가구점, 고급 레스토랑, 현대 패션회사, 나이트클럽, 새롭게 단장된 주택지 그리고 아트갤러리, 필름스쿨 그리고 스튜디오 등 전문적인 사무실들이 밀집되어 있다.

Jack Deighton, captain of the steam boat in 1867, was staying in Gastown. He is a man who opened a small bar there and had a lot of conversations with people and was in business.
